This is where it lives now: Part 2

I reached toward the backseat and told Ella to hand me the phone.

I was shaking and panting, adrenaline coursing through my veins.

I told dispatch what had happened as calmly and clearly as I could between coughs and frantic swallows.

My mouth was so dry.

After I told the story the first time, the dispatcher told me she would let me go. She had transferred the call to the proper county and deputies were on their way.

I hung up, grabbed my steering wheel, dropped my head and started taking deep breaths.

You guys ok?

I looked at them in the backseat as they stared back, wide-eyed and frozen in their seats.

Heather Alex, one of my bonus sons, had been the only one of David’s biological children that had come to visit us that night. I needed to call his mom and have her come get him. Being his step-mother, I couldn’t legally take him off of our property.

She left her house immediately and we sat in silence.

Ella’s phone rang; county dispatch was calling me.

I answered and the woman on the other end was amazing at her job. She was calm and caring and validated my every emotion.
